EXPERIMENT DAY!!!

We talked about it Friday and anxiously waited for this morning's show!

Here's what all the excitement is about....

About 2 years ago, Danny had what he thought were allergic reactions to banana’s..his face, neck, shoulders and chest turned red and he broke out in hives on his arms and neck. The incidents happened two weeks apart.

This scared him enough to stay away from bananas.

Friday, he announced that he wanted to try a banana on air just to see if he really does have an allergy to them. He nervously peeled the yellow fruit, and without hesitation...took his first bite in years.

What happened next?......................................................nothing.

We have concluded that Danny is not allergic...tomorrow there will be a round of banana splits in the control room!!

Who knew that eating a banana could be so beneficial?

This was taken from bananasweb.com.....

Bananas consist mainly of sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and fiber, which makes them ideal for an immediate and slightly prolonged source of energy

Reducing Depression
Bananas contain tryptophan, an aminoacid that can be converted to serotonin, leading to improved mood

Anemia
Bananas are relatively high in iron, which helps the body’s hemoglobin function

Constipation and Diarrhea
Due to their content in fiber, they help restore a normal bowel function. In addition, diarrhea usually depletes your body of important electrolytes (of which the most important is potassium, contained in high amounts in bananas). They also contain pectin, a soluble fiber (hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the digestive tract.

Eyesight Protection
Research published in the Archives of Ophthalmology has proven that adults consuming at least 3 servings of fruit per day have a reduced risk (by 36%) of developing age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older adults, compared to persons who consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.

Healthy Bones
Bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound that nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. These beneficial bacteria produce enzymes that increase our digestive ability and protect us from unhealthy bacteria infections. Thanks to fructooligosaccharides, probiotic bacteria can increase both in number and functionality, increasing our body’s ability to absorb calcium.

In addition, green bananas contain indigestible short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are very nutrient to the cells that make up the mucosa of the stomach. These cells, when healthy, absorb calcium much more efficiently

Healthy Kidney
About 190,000 cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed each year.Research published in the International Journal of Cancer has shown that daily consumption of whole fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, is highly protective to kidney health. The results show that, over a long timeframe (13.4 years), women eating more than 2.5 servings of fruits and vegetable per day cut their risk of kidney cancer by 40%. Among the fruits, bananas were especially protective. Women eating bananas four to six times a week halved their risk of developing the disease compared to those who did not eat this fruit. The conclusion of the study is that frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, cabbage and root vegetables, may reduce risk of kidney cancer. This is because bananas and many root vegetables contain especially high amounts of antioxidant phenolic compounds, while cabbage is rich in sulfur, necessary for effective detoxification of potential carcinogens.

Blood Pressure
Bananas are extremely high in potassium (about 4673mg), yet very low in sodium (1mg), thus having a perfect ratio for preventing high blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Heartburn
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood-sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Smoking
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. They contain vitamins B6 and B12 they contain, as well as potassium and magnesium: these substances help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Ulcers
This is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicle cases. It also helps reduce acidity and reduces irritation. Bananas stimulate the cells on the internal stomach lining to produce a thicker mucus (which protects against acid). Additionally, bananas contain protease inhibitors that help eliminate bacteria in the stomach that have been pinpointed as a primary cause of ulcers.

Nerves
Bananas are high in B vitamins that have been shows to improve nerve function
Mosquito Bites Many people report that rubbing the inside of a banana peel on a mosquito bite is very effective in reducing itching and swelling

Stress Relief
Bananas are high in potassium, which helps normalize the hearthbeat and regulate the body’s water balance. During periods of high stress, our body’s potassium levels tend to be rapidly depleted: eating bananas is a healthy way to rebalance them without using drugs

Stroke
Risk According to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can reduce the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%

WATER COOLER CONVERSATION...

An onion, apple and a potato – all have the same taste. The differences in flavor are caused by their smell.

Most women would give up ‘fancy time’ for a new wardrobe. That’s the word from a survey of 1,000 women in 10 North American cities. Women…on average would be willing to give up fancy time for 15 months for a closet full of new apparel.

Former US Presidents like Bill Clinton and now George W Bush will be receiving their annual pension…and this year it’ll total $191,000. Bill Clinton’s phone bill from 2007 totaled $104,000. His satellite tv bill for his office, complete with 8 separate receivers and all the movie channels….cost $1,800.

Are you having trouble getting garlic or onion odor off of your hands? According to Women’s Day magazine…the experts say to wash them with a blob of toothpaste. It’ll all be gone!!!

8:20 LAUGH OF THE DAY

SHORT LOVE STORY..PERFORMED BY DANNY AND LAURA

A man and a woman who had never met before,
but who were both married to other people,
found themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a trans-continental train.

Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room,
they were both very tired and fell asleep quickly, he in the upper berth and she in the lower.

At 1:00 AM, the man leaned down and gently woke the woman saying,.......... ‘Ma’am,
I’m sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet to get me a second blanket? I’m awfully cold.’

’I have a better idea,’ she replied ‘Just for tonight,...... let’s pretend that we’re married.’

’Wow!...................... That’s a great idea!’, he exclaimed.

’Good,’ she replied. .............’Get your own blanket.’

After a moment of silence, .......................he farted.

The End

Also from this morning’s show.......

He says.....“Have you lost weight?“
He means.....”I've just spent $200 on a cordless drill.”

He says.....“It’s a really good movie.“
He means.....”It's got guns, knives, fast cars, and Heather Locklear.”

He says.....“Will you marry me?”
He means.....Both my roommates have moved out, I can’t find the washer, and there is no more

Happy Tuesday!

We have so many more pictures AND video to post and they should be up and running before the week is over.
The trip home was interesting...everything went smoothly...checking in, customs, it was all easy until...we were waiting to board our plane to come home. Our flight was pushed back once, no problem, twice..well, that's tolerable..but the third time was when we all got a bit nervous. Flight crews are only allowed so many hours a day and our flight was pushed back to 11:30! Any further and it may have been cancelled. We were already talking about whether or not we would go to a hotel or sleep there. Fortunately, we were called to board at 11:30...but it still took an hour to get off the ground. De-icing took quite some time.
We landed just before 2am. Bedtime did not come until 3:30, but people have suffered worse while travelling so we can't really complain.

Talk to you tomorrow!

Here is a pic of Joe on the horse he rode on our excursion yesterday. It was amazing!
We had such an exciting adventure on the air this morning!
We qualified one last person in our Take Ya to Jamaica Part II Contest.
Then we interviewed the Founder and Chairman of Sandals Gordon "Butch" Stewart. He was so nice and you can tell he's a genuine man. Then, we interviewed his son Adam, he's the CEO of Sandals Resorts International. We found he was just as genuinely nice as his father.
We asked Clive Miller, one of the Hotel Managers at Sandals to draw our winner...then we made the call. Congratulations to Pat Opaski, the winner of our Take Ya to Jamaica Part II!

Watch out for the fruits!!!!

Another update from Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Danny & Laura have been broadcasting live from the beautiful Sandal's Grande Ocho Rios Beach & Villa Golf Resort....and having a blast.

After lounging around Sandals Grande Ocho Rios after work yesterday morning, Danny, his wife Lori, Laura and hubby Joseph, met up in the lobby to catch the bus to Mystic Mountain (10 minute bus ride from Sandal's)..sounded like it was going to be an easy excursion...

We were led to the lift..which took us up to the Mountain Top, about 700 feet above sea level. The thing is, you're on basically a ski lift above the rain forest, way above the rain forest. So, Laura kept here eyes closed because she is afraid of heights but thought this would be the worst of it. While she did take a peek every once in a while, they were closed most of the way.

At the top, we found the main building housed a gift shop, restaurant and of course the Jamaican Bobsled Team Ride. It looked a little scary but turned out to be a breeze! You actually have brakes, so you can go a bit slower if you like, though most flew around the course.

Next, it was on to the Canopy Tour. Travelling back down the mountain by zip line! We were all looking forward to this part of our excursion! The first tree to tree ride took no coaxing, everyone jumped right into action and zipped across the first part of our adventure. The ride was longer and higher with each line ride, until we hit the third one...and we cannot tell you what happens at that point...it's the surprise of the adventure...but we can tell you it leads to a suspension bridge which seems like a breeze after the surprise!

The last portion of the Canopy Tour was the actual ride back down the rest of the mountain...by of course, another lift.

It was a beautiful, breath taking ride over the rain forest. Writing this does absolutely no justice to the acutal experience...you need to try it. And have faith in the experience of your guides. That's what will get you through the "surprise".

More pics from Jamaica on Wednesday!!!

Here are a few more pics. Enjoy. Come to Jamaica mon!!!!!!

It's the Canadian Winter Sizzle at the Sandals Grande Ocho Rios Beach and Villa Golf Resort!
We continue broadcasting with 13 other stations live all this week!

We've been treated to out of this world experiences like excursions to Dunn's River Falls where we CLIMBED UP the falls! We held hands all the way up with people we did not know...it's just how it's done and no one falls. We've had our massages from the Red Lane Spa...ahhh. They have many packages to choose from including a couples massage. The staff here is amazingly friendly and accomodating.

Last night we ate on the beach at "Arizona's Restaurant" with our feet in the sand. We were treated to some entertainment by our awesome waiters, they really know how to keep you smiling. Later the group of us walked the grounds, there are some places we have not seen yet...and we came upon the Tennis Court which was all lit up! While the band played at the pool down the walkway, we played tennis.

It was a great day, one of the many we've spent here and there is still so much more to come!

More pics from Jamaica on Monday.

Monday afternoon...we were treated to a boat cruise. A 65 foot catamaran cruise, called...THE KATT. It was about 2.5 hours long....cruised up and down the coast of Ocho Rios. We even floated passed a cruise ship called, Ruby Princess. It was enormous...and amazing!!! Here are a few pics from the day.

January 9th, 2009

It's here!

Take Ya to Jamaica Day! We take off tonight with our winner Dave and his wife on our first portion of our trip, to Toronto. Then, early tomorrow morning we are off to Jamaica!

Monday morning we are live from the beach at Sandal's Grande Ocho Rios Beach and Villa Resort in Jamaica. AND we're giving away ANOTHER trip next week!

Listen for your cue to call to qualify. We'll be talking about all things Jamaica and later in the show we'll ask you to call and tell us what we were talking about. There will be 5 qualifiers next week, the Grand Prize will be drawn FRIDAY! We want to Take Ya to Jamaica!

Today we talked about how the common cold and fevers were treated in the "Olden Days"

to reduce fever...drink boiled onions
to cure a cold...boil a hog hoof and drink the water
to get rid of a headache...rub an onion over your forehead
to cure boils...carry nutmeg in your pocket
to grow taller...eat a banana
to get rid of freckles...rub a live frog on your face
to treat cramps...place a magnet at the foot of your bed to draw the pain from your body
to get rid of warts...wrap a strip of bacon around your head

Then Dave called in with this cure for the common cold...
You'll need...
hot mustard
flour

mix the mustard and flour to make a paste
place the paste in between 2 pieces of wax paper
place on chest
You can also use the paste directly on the chest, though it may be too hot for some.

Thanks to Anna for this fever remedy
You'll need...

white sport socks
white vinegar
soak the socks in white vinegar
Ring the socks out
put the socks on
wrap up feet with a large towel or blanket (this is so you can't smell the vinegar)
in 30 minutes the socks will be bone dry and the fever will go down

Talk to you Monday!!!

It was fun celebrating Elvis Presley's Birthday today! He was born back in 1935 and would have been 74 today.
On his 11th birthday, he asked for a bike. His dad bought him a guitar. The rest is history.

I wonder what would have happened had he lived.......

All right, one more sleep before we head to Toronto for the night. Then...Saturday it's off to Jamaica. Tomorrow we'll be talking Dave Kucher to see how he and his wife Maria are...are they ready?

Talk to you tomorrow!

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Happy Ukrainian Christmas!

There are also only two sleeps til Danny and I take off for Toronto, then Saturday we are off bright and early to Jamaica! Until then it's run around and gather all things necessary for travel.

Joseph and I did just go to Jamaica last month for the Reggae Half Marathon, but we still need to pick up some last minute stuff. It will be tough to leave the kids behind again, but our house sitter will keep everything running smoothly plus we do a grocery run tailored to what they want while we're gone. Everyone will be happy.

Talk to you tomorrow!
